“Cardinal and Company” Watercolor on paper, view size 19 1⁄2” x 13 1/2”
Daini was born in as well as died in Rome. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and exhibited throughout Europe. He is a well listed artist. He was equally skilled in the art of both watercolor and oil painting but preferred the medium of watercolor. He was a genre painter with skills on par with the best of his time such as Reggianini and Landini. This piece shows Daini at his finest with his exquisite rendering of details such as the sheen and folds of various materials and the texture of various elements in the composition. His interiors, as was usual of genre painters of his circle, combined a humorous quality with elegance and a sense of serenity. Cardinals were often included in many of the genre interiors of the time to provide a greater sense of elegance and opulence. This piece is not only a masterfully rendered watercolor but also a marvelous example of the art of the time.
