Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. He was born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872 and died in Schaarbeck in Brabant in 1938. Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lifes of florals and fruits. He also painted genre scenes and interiors with equal skill. He lived and worked primarily in Brussels, but traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially Italy. Carlier lived and worked in Brittany for a short period of time as well. He has often been described as a virtuoso painter of still lives, and flowers in particular, however his interiors and genre scenes have recently proven to be as highly sought after and valued.
